The CES Letter originated in spring 2013 when Jeremy Runnells, a seventh-generation Mormon and returned missionary who had experienced a faith crisis in February 2012, composed a detailed document at the request of a Church Educational System (CES) Director. Runnells, who had served as an Eagle Scout, graduated from BYU, and married in the San Diego Temple, compiled extensive research regarding the LDS Church's origins, history, and practices into a formal letter titled "Letter to a CES Director." The CES Director reportedly acknowledged receiving the "very well written" letter and promised a response, though no response was ever forthcoming. The document subsequently became public and viral, evolving into what Runnells described as a "living document" that underwent multiple revisions and
