The Utah War of 1857–1858 was a confrontation between the United States government and Mormon settlers in Utah Territory, triggered by reports of rebellion that reached President James Buchanan’s administration. In 1857, Buchanan dispatched approximately 2,500–5,000 federal troops to Utah to install a new territorial governor and suppress what officials believed was an insurrection against federal authority.
